CHAPTER FIVE

“WHAT NOW?” ERIC asked.

I just stood there, thinking hard. Maybe I’d be able to hide somewhere in the dorm and sneak out during the day. Eventually, I turned to Eric.

“All right, man, listen. You act like you normally do. I don’t think you’re in any danger, at least not for now because you’re-“

“Yeah, I’m not a nerd, but what are you going to do?”

“I’ll try to hide in the dorms and sneak out later. Maybe we can get out of here at one point, like during lunch. You sneaked out before, right? So you know how to get out of the school?”

“Yeah, I know, but-?”

“All right. If Mrs. Richter or anyone else asks, tell them I went insane and sneaked out or something. Oh, and if you run into Kim, tell her about the plan, and that I’m all right!”

Eric nodded, but I could see how anxious he was. After he’d left for morning training, I just sat there on my bed, considering where I’d be able to hide. For minutes, I wrecked my brain. I considered hiding somewhere in the room, but I was sure Mrs. Richter would find me. Maybe I could hide in the bathroom, or hell, the showers. Before I could follow through on my plan, however, an angry Mrs. Richter burst into the room. I jerked up and stared at her with wide eyes.

“Mrs. Richter, what are you-?” I asked, shocked, and backed away from her.

“Don’t you dare Mrs. Richter me, Steven,” she yelled at me. “I know you were out drinking the other night, and last night, you and Eric just dashed off without so much as saying a word. And now, Mr. Siegert informs me you were trying to do the same thing this morning! I swear, Steven, this is the last straw! Now get ready for class!”

I just looked at her, waiting for her to leave, but she didn’t budge, not even an inch.

“Well, Steven, I’m waiting!”

“This is ridiculous. I’m staying right here. Don’t you get what’s-“ I started, but she cut me off right away.

“I don’t care what you have to say. Or do you want me to call Mr. Siegert? I’m sure he’d be more than happy to drag you to school personally!”

For a while longer, I held her gaze, but then, cursing to myself, I got my backpack, and put on my shoes.

“Seriously, Steven, what’s the matter with you these days?”

I turned to her for a moment. Her face showed an expression of misery and honest concern. When I saw her like this, I knew she was still the same Mrs. Richter, and I knew she cared. I opened my mouth to tell her what was going on, but before I could, she spoke up again.

“We can talk later, but for now, it’s time for school!”

With that, she pushed me from the room.

As I mixed in with the trail of other students walking to school, I desperately thought about what to do. I couldn’t go to school, I just couldn’t.
